Copy Editing and Proofreading ($50/hr)

As a copy editor, I help make documents easier to read by correcting misspellings and typos, cleaning up sentences so they sound more natural and flow more smoothly, and ensuring consistent use of terminology. Where applicable, I make sure that the copy adheres more closely to specified style guidelines; when necessary, I adjust document formatting (paragraph styles) to ensure that formatting is applied consistently throughout the document.

Clean, error-free text will go largely unnoticed; text full of typos and/or errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation will call unwanted attention to itself. In a business context, these basic errors can suggest a lack of professionalism, credibility, and/or attention to detail; in a storytelling context, they can jolt the reader out of the world that you have so carefully crafted for them.

In my copy editing work, I draw upon nine years of experience as a Japanese-to-English translator, four years of data entry quality control for a dot-com, and an excellent grasp of the English language. To ensure compatibility with client files, I use Microsoft Word for Mac 2011; its Track Changes feature enables clients to review changes made to a document before committing to them. Unless a specific style guide is to be used, I consult The Chicago Manual of Style (16th Edition) for those sticky questions that sometimes come up.

Anyone who works with the written word can benefit from copy editing and proofreading, including:

  • people who want to focus on the substance of what they are writing instead of the mechanics of writing
  • people who want to ensure their written material is as free of errors as possible before it goes to their clients
  • people who don’t have the benefit of an in-house editing department to handle these tasks
  • people for whom English is not their native language
  • people who simply want to have a fresh pair of eyes look over their text
  • writers preparing their work for publication

Book Design and Consulting ($50/hr)

Self-publishing is becoming increasingly popular. However, it can still be a daunting task, especially for the first-time author. I can help you weigh your options and navigate the steps involved in getting your book published, including:

  • e-book, print, or both?
  • which service to use
  • layout/formatting
  • image acquisition and editing
  • cover design
  • ISBN options
  • file preparation and upload
  • proofing options

I do offer design services (you can find examples of my book cover designs here), but if you are doing everything yourself in order to keep your costs down, I can provide guidance to help you get the most out of what you have to work with.
