Separation Anxiety

SeparationAnxiety-plus

Separation Anxiety is a collection of poems and photographs that explores the emotions that come up when things end.

My participation in the 2013 iteration of National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) coincided with my then-pending divorce. I found a lot of my emotions about the divorce—and about being on my own again—coming out in many of the poems. In early 2014, when I went through my old journals (which go back to 1987) to gather all the poems I’d written in one place, I discovered that a lot of the poems explored the same emotional landscape. When these themes re-emerged during NaPoWriMo 2014, the focus of this collection became clear.

I have long preferred the relative directness of song lyrics to the more flowery language or ‘affected’ prose typical of a lot of poetry; the poems in Separation Anxiety reflect this preference. I believe the more direct language more effectively conveys the emotions in each poem, even when the actual subject is more oblique.

The inclusion of photographs is deliberate. Not only have I been doing photography since I was a kid, but also I wanted Separation Anxiety to be more than a simple poetry book. If I have chosen wisely, the twenty-four Polaroids included in the book will complement the text.

This book is for anyone going through their own separation, breakup, or divorce, and the emotional rollercoaster that goes along with it. Since we are not often encouraged to talk about how we feel at such times, it is easy to forget that we are not alone, that other folks are going through the same things, that this happens to everyone at one time or another.
